Former President Barack Obama thrilled the crowd at a recent campaign rally in Detroit with a surprise performance—he rapped. Obama took the stage after hometown icon Eminem, who introduced him with a powerful lead-in. Nervous about following such a legendary act, Obama embraced the moment by rapping a few lines from Eminem’s hit song Lose Yourself.

As reported by The Guardian, Obama, while feeling the pressure of the moment, lightheartedly remarked, “I gotta say, I have done a lot of rallies, so I don’t usually get nervous, but I was feeling some kind of way following Eminem.” Channeling the rapper’s signature style, Obama began rapping the iconic lyrics: “I notice my palms are sweaty.

Knees weak, arms are heavy. Vomit on my sweater already, mom’s spaghetti. I’m nervous, but on the surface, I look calm and ready to drop bombs, but I keep forgetting!” The crowd roared with excitement as Obama playfully pretended to walk away before returning to continue his speech. Eminem, known for his political activism and his vocal criticism of Donald Trump, has used his platform to encourage people to vote and speak their minds.

At the rally, he reiterated his commitment to freedom of expression, stating, “I think it’s important to use your voice. I also think that people shouldn’t be afraid to express their opinions… I think Vice President Harris supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others will be protected and upheld.” Over the years, Eminem has released multiple songs taking direct shots at Trump, including a 2016 diss track in which he called Trump a “f—-g loose cannon.”

Obama didn’t miss the chance to criticize Trump either. During his speech, he addressed Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 election results, which led to widespread unrest and false claims of voter fraud. Referring to the chaotic aftermath, including protests demanding to “stop the count,” Obama remarked, “Donald Trump couldn’t accept losing … there is absolutely no evidence that this man thinks about anybody but himself.”

With biting humor, he added, “You’d be worried if Grandpa was acting like this,” a reference to Trump’s erratic behavior and desire for unchecked power. While Obama’s rap and remarks electrified the crowd, HuffPost noted that not everyone might have been equally entertained. On The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon humorously took a jab at Obama’s unexpected rap debut, saying, “I saw that last night in Detroit, former President Obama campaigned with Eminem… And he recited a few lines of Lose Yourself.

That’s right. The crowd loved it. While Sasha and Malia were like, well, we lost our votes.” Fallon joked that Obama’s daughters might have cringed at their dad’s attempt at rapping, offering a lighthearted spin on the former president’s surprise performance.

Overall, Obama’s blend of humor, a surprise rap, and pointed political critique made the rally a memorable moment for attendees and showcased his enduring charisma on the campaign trail.
