In her newly released memoir, Melania, former First Lady Melania Trump opens up about a pivotal moment in her life as Donald Trump was on the brink of winning the 2016 presidential election. Known for her quiet and reserved demeanor, Melania shares an intimate glimpse into her protective instincts as a mother, revealing that her priority was not her husband’s victory but the well-being of their son, Barron Trump.

In one of the book’s excerpts, Melania recounts the morning of Election Day in 2016 and the promise she made to her then-10-year-old son, Barron. “Barron was still asleep when I entered his room and gave him a gentle kiss on the forehead,” she writes. At that moment, she realized that his life had already undergone a significant transformation since his father’s decision to run for the presidency.

She felt a surge of maternal protection, knowing how challenging the journey ahead could be for a young boy if his father were to become the President of the United States. From that moment on, Melania made a vow to protect Barron at all costs, understanding the potential scrutiny and challenges he would face as the child of a sitting president.

“I made a commitment there and then that if we were headed to the White House, I would fiercely protect my beautiful son in every way I could,” she writes. Melania has stood by her promise, shielding Barron from the spotlight and media attention despite frequent criticism directed her way. Now a college student at NYU’s Stern School, Barron has largely remained out of public view, thanks to Melania’s efforts.

The former First Lady, of Slovenian descent, maintained a conscious distance from Donald Trump’s political events, ensuring that she and Barron appeared only on select occasions. According to a Palm Beach source quoted by PEOPLE, Melania’s protective nature is nothing new. “She has always surrounded herself with family. She is a doting mother to Barron and very protective of him.

This is nothing new. Barron has always been a first priority in [Melania’s] life,” the source explained. While Melania is aware of her husband’s legal battles and remains concerned about them, the source emphasized, “[Melania] has always put Barron first. She is a good mother.” In a recent interview promoting her memoir, the 54-year-old opened up about how life has changed since Barron left for college. Speaking with Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt, Melania shared, “I could not say I’m an empty nester. I don’t feel that way.”

She elaborated on Barron’s decision to attend college in New York, saying, “It was his decision to come here, that he wants to be in New York and study in New York and live in his home, and I respect that.” Despite her support for his choice, Melania admitted her ongoing concern: “I hope he will have a great experience because his life is very different than any other 18, 19-year-old child.”

Melania’s memoir offers a candid look at her dedication to her son’s well-being, painting a picture of a mother who has prioritized family over politics. Her protective instincts have remained constant as she navigates life after the White House, ensuring that Barron continues to have as normal an experience as possible despite their unique circumstances.
