Bennie Thompson Criticizes Marjorie Taylor Greene for Fundraising Off Mayorkas Impeachment Proceedings
During a recent session aimed at deliberating the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, House Homeland Security Committee’s Ranking Member, Bennie Thompson (D-MS), leveled serious accusations against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
Thompson highlighted Greene’s actions of capitalizing on the impeachment proceedings by using them as a basis for fundraising efforts, casting a shadow over the integrity of the process. Amid Tuesday’s hearing, Thompson openly criticized his Republican colleagues for engaging in what he described as a politically motivated charade.
As reported by Raw Story on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, He articulated his concerns by stating, “Republican members of Congress sworn to support and defend the Constitution are rejecting the framers’ clear intent and over two centuries of precedent in favor of a sham impeachment.” Thompson did not mince words as he lambasted the proceedings against Mayorkas, branding them a “baseless political stunt by extreme MAGA Republicans.”
Thompson specifically called out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, among others, accusing them of not only advocating for the impeachment but also exploiting the situation for financial gain through fundraising activities. This move, according to Thompson, was part of a broader strategy of scapegoating Secretary Mayorkas, a tactic he vehemently opposed.
Furthermore, Thompson critiqued the Republicans’ approach to the impeachment, likening it to a haphazard attempt akin to “throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks.” He condemned the grounds on which the impeachment was being pursued as vague and unprecedented, summarizing the charges as a refusal to abide by the law and a violation of public trust.
Through his statements, Thompson conveyed deep skepticism about the legitimacy and motives behind the impeachment efforts directed at Secretary Mayorkas, framing them as a calculated political maneuver rather than a legitimate constitutional process.
