“Even when you think the rules don’t apply to you” Letitia James Sends Poetic Valentine to Donald Trump Amidst Civil Fraud Case
On Valentine’s Day, in a move that intertwined legal proceedings with poetic expression, New York Attorney General Letitia James sent a unique message to Donald Trump, the former president and central figure in a civil fraud case she is leading.
Her message, delivered in the form of a poem, read: “Roses are red, Violets are blue, No one is above the law, Even when you think the rules don’t apply to you.” This poetic gesture emerged around noon on Wednesday, just a few hours following Trump’s own Valentine’s Day message to his wife, which notably featured uppercase grievances about ongoing witch hunts, legal indictments, and arrests.
In his message, Trump expressed his appreciation for Melania’s unwavering support, despite her conspicuous absence from the campaign trail for the 2024 election, remarking, “You never left my side.” The poem from James sparked a range of reactions; some of her followers were charmed and expressed their support for her efforts to hold Trump accountable for the fraud he was found liable for in the previous year.
“Happy Valentine’s Day!” replied Glen Carroll. “Stay strong!”
“Love this!” wrote Beth Caruso. “Justice will prevail.”
“From another Tish,” added Tish Metcalfe, “thanks for all you do to hold people accountable.”
However, the reaction was not universally positive, especially among Trump’s staunch supporters on the social media platform X. These individuals took particular issue with the concluding lines of James’ poem, leveling accusations of corruption and political bias against her.
One user, Aaron L Schulte, reflected a sentiment aligned with Trump’s narrative, suggesting that the legal actions against Trump were part of a broader political witch hunt, a theme that Trump himself alluded to in his Valentine’s message to Melania. Schulte’s response was a stark warning: “Remember you said that when you are indicted for election interference.”
Another user, under the handle @psychforensic, predicted a downfall for James, stating, “We WILL see your comeuppance. It will be glorious.” This notion of comeuppance aligns with what legal expert Lisa Rubin suggests could be a significant moment for Trump on Friday. Judge Arthur Engoron is expected to make a ruling in the case involving a $370 million lawsuit. Rubin playfully used Trump’s vernacular to emphasize the potential impact of the ruling, suggesting that the consequences could be, in Trump’s own words, “yuge.”
