JD Vance Defends Kash Patel Amid Controversial Comparison to Soviet Official Beria
Vice President-elect J.D. Vance voiced strong support for Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s expected nominee for FBI director, following a controversial comparison to Lavrenty Beria, the infamous head of the Soviet Union’s secret police.
In a statement to NBC News, former National Security Advisor John Bolton urged the Senate to unanimously reject Patel’s nomination. “Trump has nominated Kash Patel to be his Lavrenty Beria. Fortunately, the FBI is not the NKVD. The Senate should reject this nomination 100-0,” Bolton said.
Beria, one of Stalin’s most notorious enforcers, orchestrated the 1940 massacre of 22,000 Polish officers and was accused of committing numerous atrocities, including the rape of young girls. He was executed in 1953.
Bolton’s comparison sparked heated reactions, with Vance dismissing the criticism and using it to praise Patel. “John Bolton has been wrong about everything so I guess Kash must be pretty awesome,” Vance posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
The nomination of Patel, a close Trump ally, has already drawn polarized reactions. Supporters view Patel as a loyal and competent choice to lead the FBI under the Trump administration’s agenda, while critics, like Bolton, argue that his close ties to Trump and controversial past actions make him unsuitable for the role.
Patel, who has held several high-profile roles during Trump’s previous term, has often been a lightning rod for criticism due to his loyalty to the former president and his involvement in high-stakes investigations and policy decisions. His expected nomination underscores Trump’s push to consolidate trusted allies in key positions ahead of his upcoming term.
The comparison to Beria marks a significant escalation in the rhetoric surrounding Patel’s potential confirmation. While Bolton’s remarks highlight deep concerns about the independence of the FBI under Patel’s leadership, Vance’s response reflects the unwavering support Patel enjoys within Trump’s inner circle.
As the Senate prepares for what promises to be a contentious confirmation process, the debate over Patel’s nomination will likely become a litmus test for broader partisan divisions in Washington. Whether Patel secures the role or faces bipartisan opposition, his nomination has already become a focal point in Trump’s return to power.
