Teen Celebrating 16th Birthday Texts Mom After Shooting: ‘Mama, Plz. Help Me’
What began as a celebration for Naomi Briggs’ 16th birthday turned into a nightmare when the teenager was shot in the early hours of Thursday morning. Naomi is now fighting for her life in an Oregon hospital, following a chilling text she sent to her mother, Drea Briggs: “I got shot. Mama. Plz. Help me.”
Drea, shocked and terrified, rushed to the hospital, where Naomi was receiving life-saving treatment. The teenager remains in intensive care, undergoing a series of surgeries to address the extensive internal damage caused by the bullet. “She’s hooked up to machines, and her whole abdomen is still open,” Drea shared.
“The doctor did tell me there was a chance she might not make it, and so it’s just been a struggle.” Naomi described as a typical teenager who loves friends, animals, and children, has already undergone four surgeries, with another scheduled. Doctors warn her recovery will be long and arduous. The alleged shooter, 18-year-old Sky Korbut, has been arrested and charged with third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
Authorities claim Korbut purchased the firearm illegally on the streets of Portland’s Old Town Chinatown for $650, having failed a background check to buy a shotgun legally. Korbut had reportedly been driving Naomi home when the gun discharged, striking her. His bail is set at $10,000. Drea spoke candidly about the emotional toll of the incident in an interview with KGW 8.
“I kind of do feel like it’s a nightmare…I’m still trying to process it. I’m still in shock. I never thought this would happen ever,” she said. Reflecting on the tragedy, she added, “She’s only 16 years old, and now her whole life has changed forever.
This never should have happened. Know who your kids are hanging around. This is the tragedy of guns.” To help cover Naomi’s medical expenses and long-term rehabilitation, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched. The support has provided a glimmer of hope for the family during this harrowing time.
“The support we’ve received is overwhelming,” Drea expressed. “It’s what’s keeping me strong for her. Hold onto your kids—you never know what’s going to happen.” Naomi’s community continues to rally around her, hoping for her full recovery while grappling with the preventable nature of this heartbreaking incident.
