Matthew Perry’s Family Reflects on His Legacy and Honors His Mission After Tragic Death
Matthew Perry’s younger sister, Caitlin Morrison, and his stepfather, Keith Morrison, recently spoke publicly for the first time following the beloved actor’s “incredibly shocking” passing. In an emotional interview with HELLO! Canada, the family members shared their thoughts on Perry’s legacy and how they are keeping his memory alive by continuing his work in addiction support.
Caitlin, 43, serves as the executive director of the Matthew Perry Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals struggling with addiction—a cause that Perry held close to his heart. “It’s like sitting right next to Matthew, working with him every day on something that was important to him,” Caitlin shared, expressing how her work at the foundation connects her with her late brother’s mission.
Perry’s stepfather, Keith Morrison, who married the actor’s mother in 1981, described Perry’s desire to make a difference in the world. “He would like to be remembered for doing something to help people suffering from addiction,” Morrison said. The family’s goal is to carry on Perry’s dedication to helping others, even amidst their grief.
Reflecting on the actor’s sudden passing due to the “acute effects of ketamine,” Keith noted the emotional toll: “Anybody who has lost a child will tell you that, even if you are in some way prepared for the possibility, it’s shattering.” Despite the heartache, he added, “What we have decided to do is hang on to that determination and try to do something useful.”
Caitlin also spoke of Perry’s vibrant presence and ability to bring joy to those around him. “He had this ability to fill up a room with light,” she said. “When people were in a room with [Matthew], there was this magnetic energy. Everybody just had a smile on their face and they clung to everything that he said.”
In late October 2023, the Friends star was tragically found unresponsive in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home. The family’s heartfelt reflections honor Perry’s compassionate spirit and legacy, underscoring their commitment to advancing his mission of supporting those battling addiction.
