Canadian singer-songwriter Jutes recently opened up about his struggles with imposter syndrome and self-doubt, even as he performed a sold-out show in Los Angeles. Speaking with People magazine, the 33-year-old artist reflected on his journey and the ongoing challenges he faces as a musician.

“I’ve always wanted to do a headline show,” Jutes shared, admitting he often questioned whether anyone would show up if he did. “I kept just being like, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I’d be able to even… I don’t know if even half the venue would be full,’ because I have imposter syndrome and anxiety and all that stuff,” he confessed. These feelings, he added, have frequently held him back, though not enough to stop him completely. “They’ve slowed me down,” he explained.

Before he pursued music professionally, Jutes spent time as a basketball player, which eventually sparked his interest in hip-hop, leading him to experiment with rap. He credits his father, a drummer in a rock band, with introducing him to music. Reflecting on his early years, he shared, “I wasn’t scared to do anything. I would jump on stage anywhere, thinking I was going to steal the show even if I was terrible. That blind faith got me through a lot, including getting made fun of.”

Despite his confidence in those early days, Jutes had to teach himself to sing, a process he describes as ongoing. “I wasn’t a singer growing up, so I had to teach myself,” he said. “I’ve gotten a lot better, but I still feel insecure about my voice, especially singing live. I always worry, ‘Oh, I’m going to be pitchy, and everyone’s going to know.’”

Even at his sold-out show, Jutes found himself questioning his performance. “I was on stage thinking, ‘I wonder if everybody here is like, “Oh, this guy sucks live.”’” he admitted. His insecurities didn’t dampen the support he received, however, and he continues to push through these challenges, determined to keep growing as an artist.

Jutes, who is engaged to singer Demi Lovato, celebrated a milestone in his personal journey last year, achieving 100 days of sobriety in July 2022. Reflecting on that achievement, he posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying sobriety “feels great.”

His journey highlights both his resilience and commitment to his craft. By openly discussing his struggles, Jutes brings attention to the emotional hurdles many artists face, proving that even as he battles self-doubt, he remains dedicated to overcoming these challenges and sharing his music with the world.
