“I Stand By It”: Lily-Rose Depp Reflects on The Idol Amid Criticism and Cancellation
Lily-Rose Depp is sharing her perspective on The Idol a year after the HBO series faced significant backlash and was ultimately canceled after one season in August 2023. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the 25-year-old actress expressed pride in the show and her role despite its controversial reception.
“I love it. Honestly, I love it,” Depp said of the series. “You make something and you hope that people like it, and you hope that it resonates with people.” Depp acknowledged the polarizing nature of the project, saying, “We always knew some people were not going to like it and that it was going to be too much for some people. But I stand by it. We made a choice, and we went for it.”
Reflecting on her experience filming the Sam Levinson-directed series, Depp described it as a pivotal moment in her career. “I loved the experience of making it—that was a huge turning point for me,” she shared. “I learned so much about myself, and I got to progress so much in my work.” Depp called the production “a real growing period,” adding, “I’m proud of what it is.”
Addressing the intense criticism from fans and reviewers alike, Depp explained that she tries not to take such feedback personally. “No matter what the project is, you go there and you try to give your heart and your best and everything,” she said.
Despite the controversy and the show’s cancellation, Depp expressed interest in revisiting her role. “I would’ve loved to have worked with Sam again. And I loved the character profoundly,” she concluded. The Idol had been a highly anticipated project upon its release, with its exploration of fame, excess, and self-destruction generating both intrigue and criticism. While the series sparked debate, Depp’s reflections highlight her dedication to the craft and her commitment to pushing boundaries as an actress.
