GOP should “unify behind Trump” and “end the disastrous Biden presidency,” according to Speaker Mike Johnson
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana has recently made a public appeal for the Republican Party to consolidate support behind former President Donald Trump as he aims to challenge President Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election.
This call for unity follows a significant development in the Republican political landscape: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s withdrawal from the presidential race and his subsequent endorsement of Trump, just two days before the New Hampshire primary. Trump’s potential nomination for the 2024 race sets the stage for a possible electoral rematch against Biden, reported the Washington Post.
In a statement shared on social media, Johnson highlighted the reasons behind his endorsement of Trump, citing the former president’s past achievements in boosting the economy, securing borders, establishing energy independence, and maintaining a strong national defense.
Johnson expressed his belief in Trump’s ability to replicate these successes if re-elected, while also contributing to the expansion of the Republican majority in Congress. “I encourage Republicans to unite behind President Trump so we can achieve victory in November and end the disastrous Biden presidency,” Johnson wrote, emphasizing the need for party unity.
This endorsement comes amidst a wave of support for Trump from several high-profile Republicans, including former presidential candidates and influential party members. Notably, endorsements have come from Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and others such as Senators Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas.
Trump’s campaign has already seen success in the early stages of the primary season, notably in the Iowa caucuses, where he secured 51% of the vote, surpassing the record set by Bob Dole in 1988 by a significant margin. As the New Hampshire primary approaches, Trump’s prospects appear strong.
A recent poll, conducted between January 16th and 19th, showed him leading with 50% support among likely Republican primary voters, ahead of former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who polled at 39%. This poll surveyed 1,210 likely Republican primary voters and has a margin of error of +/-2.8%.
The buildup to the New Hampshire primary is a critical moment for the Republican Party, as it navigates its leadership and direction ahead of the 2024 presidential election. With Trump’s emerging dominance in the early primaries and the rallying of key Republican figures behind his candidacy, the stage is set for a potentially intense and closely watched electoral battle.
