Jennifer Aniston, one of the most iconic faces of Friends, was not always present on set during some episodes, and it took one sharp-eyed fan to notice her absence. While the Murder Mystery actress’ non-appearance often went unnoticed, a diligent fan, Jordan D’Amico, recently pointed out that Aniston’s role as Rachel Green was temporarily swapped out for a mystery woman in two episodes of the popular NBC sitcom.

The discovery was made in Season 9, Episode 15, titled “The One with the Mugging,” where Rachel’s character was replaced for a brief moment. Jordan explained the scene in a post on RecentlyHeard.com: “Only a few minutes into the episode, an enthusiastic Rachel rushes into Monica’s apartment to tell Joey that he got an audition with the famous and fictional actor, Leonard Hayes, played by Jeff Goldblum.”

As the scene unfolded, D’Amico noticed that Rachel Green was portrayed by someone else. “The three friends admit to admiring the actor for his cell phone commercials in which he starred opposite a monkey. Monica zealously posits that perhaps the monkey will be at the audition. Joey reacts by saying, ‘Don’t make me more nervous than I already am!’ and goes to sit back down. It’s at this point that… BAM!”

In another episode from the same season, The One with the Sharks, the mystery woman makes a brief appearance once again. Just 12 minutes and 20 seconds into the episode, Rachel is seen sitting with Monica in Monica’s apartment when suddenly, as the camera pans back, it’s a different woman wearing a dark blue top and sporting straight hair instead of Aniston.

Though the replacement was brief, D’Amico points out that the swap didn’t go unnoticed. “It was short-lived, but was definitely noticeable,” he shared.

The appearance of the mystery woman in these episodes adds a fun Easter egg for Friends fans, who now have a new detail to spot while rewatching the beloved sitcom. While it remains unclear why Aniston was absent for these scenes, the brief change certainly caught the attention of keen-eyed viewers, reminding us of how even the smallest details can make a difference in pop culture history.
