Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for a special election to fill the House seat of Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL), even though Waltz has not yet officially resigned. Waltz confirmed on Monday that he plans to step down on January 20 to become President-elect Donald Trump’s national security advisor. Despite this, DeSantis moved swiftly, signing an order the same day to initiate the special election process.

According to the Florida Department of State, the timeline for the 6th Congressional District special election sets early voting to begin just two days before Waltz’s resignation becomes effective. The general election is scheduled for April 1, coinciding with the special election for the House seat previously vacated by former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

The decision to start the election process before the seat is officially vacant has raised eyebrows. Punchbowl News co-founder John Bresnahan commented on the unusual timing, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “How does Florida start special elections for House seats that aren’t vacant for weeks, you ask? Because they just did.”

The expedited schedule reflects the urgency of maintaining Republican control in a closely divided House. With the GOP holding a narrow majority, every seat matters, and Republicans are keen to ensure their stronghold in Florida’s 6th District remains intact.

The overlapping special elections also highlight the state’s focus on maintaining continuity amid shifting political dynamics. Waltz’s appointment as Trump’s national security advisor adds another layer of political significance to the race, as his successor will step into a pivotal role in representing a Republican stronghold.

The April 1 election will not only decide Waltz’s replacement but also the outcome of Gaetz’s former seat, adding to the stakes. The compressed timeline for both races could pose logistical challenges for candidates and voters alike.

The unusual decision to launch the special election process before the vacancy occurred underscores the strategic importance of the 6th Congressional District. As Republicans prepare for a contentious 2024 legislative session, securing and solidifying their majority in the House remains a top priority. For now, Florida’s approach to managing these overlapping elections signals a sense of urgency in navigating the state’s shifting political landscape.
